Sweta | VMUG Bengaluru

Community is everything. Creating connections around the world and creating spaces for those connections to flourish is why VMUG exists and the passion our members show for continuing to solve real problems together is what makes our community especially powerful.

Read on to hear, in her own words, how Sweta Sharma, VMUG Leader in Bengaluru has felt the impact of being a member of the VMUG community from attending VMUG Connect STL to the advice she’s been given along the way and the advice she’d give new technologists moving through their careers.

VMUG

How would you describe the VMUG community in three words?

Sweta: “Inclusive, Empowering, Global- VMUG brings together people from different roles, experience levels, and geographies all driven by a shared passion to learn and grow together.”

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about VMUG?

Sweta: “VMUG isn’t just about attending events, it’s about belonging to a community where learning, mentorship, and growth happen organically. You get back far more than just technical knowledge.

VMUG, for me, is more than a community — it’s a platform for transformation. From learning new technologies to shaping up Tech leaders, it’s where passion meets possibility.

What was your first VMUG event, and what do you remember most about it?

Sweta: “My first VMUG event was eye-opening which happened in St. Louis, USA. What stood out the most was the openness of the community. People were genuinely willing to share real-world experiences, not just polished success stories. That authenticity hooked me instantly.”

Career

What’s your personal “why” for being in this industry?

Sweta: “Technology gives us the power to solve real problems at scale but people make it meaningful. My “why” is enabling others to grow, succeed, and feel confident in a constantly evolving industry.”

How do you balance learning + leading + networking?

Sweta: “I see them as interconnected, not competing priorities. I learn so I can lead better, I lead to create opportunities for others, and networking naturally follows when you show up with authenticity and purpose.”

Advice

What’s a piece of advice you’ve received from another member that stuck with you?

Sweta: “Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’ to contribute, start by sharing what you’re learning. That advice really resonated with me and shaped how I approach leadership in the community.”

What do you want the next generation of IT pros to know about community?

Sweta: “You don’t have to grow alone. Community accelerates learning, opens doors you didn’t know existed, and reminds you that asking questions is a strength, not a weakness.”
